Meet the Artist

Joshua Bird is the talented contemporary Aboriginal artist I have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with for Littlest Dreamers first range. Josh co-created the Gumnut Dreaming and Rainbow Dreaming designs with myself and also designed the Unity Romper symbol. I am eternally grateful for his creativity and the open way he shares his culture.

Josh is a proud Wiradjuri man living on Bundjalung Country. To him his art is a connection to his ancestors and a way in which he can express his relationship and deep respect for country. Josh felt displaced from his Aboriginal family as he grew up. The journey he has been taking back to his roots has been closely intertwined with his artworks. Art can be a beautiful escape, it can also a path to deep healing.

Finding comfort in remaining anonymous, he created his Instagram and art account under the alias Jay. Over time, and through community support, Josh is now finding more confidence with his identity and being seen as he is.

His work reflects his strong connection to country, in particular the coastal landscapes in which he has grown up along side of. The other aspects of Jay’s work, depict relationships people have with themselves, others and country.

Not only does he create beautiful detailed and meaningful works of art, but, he is truly a wonderful man. Josh’s journey can best be followed on his Instagram page @jay.bird.artwork
